Nora Roberts is one of the few authors who can do this every time she puts pen to paper. I can be someone else because the author transports me to another world-whether it is our world, the past, the future, or a fantasy. When a writer can put me in her creation’s shoes, it’s a win-win-for a few hours, I can live vicariously through anyone. I want characters I love, characters I hate, characters I can feel with-joy, pain, sorrow. Not that this jealousy would ever stop me from buying a good book.įor me, the single most important factor in any story (other than competent writing) is character. Pride-because as an author, I love being part of a community that contributes to great storytelling and envy-because when a great storyteller proves their chops time and time again, I can’t help but feel a teensy, tiny bit jealous that they are so damn talented. I always seem to have both a sense of pride and envy when I read great authors. Year One by Nora Roberts is the first book in the Chronicles of the One series-an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magick, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives.

When he was young, he enjoyed reading a lot. Sanderson’s writing career was nurtured in a rather challenging way. He currently lives in America Fort, Utah. In 2005, he graduated with a masters degree in Creative Writing from BYU. Upon his return to BYU, he enrolled for an English major instead of pursuing biochemistry. It is in this period that he realized that his interest was not in biochemistry but rather in writing. One of such missionary work was based in Seoul, South Korea. He joined Brigham Young University as a biochemistry major and consequently took a break to do mission work with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Yet it has been clear, for years, that something may have gone down between Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia on both Buffy and Angel, and Whedon, who created both series. It was also easier to ignore the rumors about the show’s creator, Joss Whedon, because he had long been held up as a geeky demigod and feminist hero. Or how the show pulled a “ bury your gays” on Tara and Willow. Or the utter lack of any characters of color. Like how characters on the show are always punished for having sex. It felt easier to ignore the problems when we were just obsessed teenagers. And it sure felt that way, and for its time it certainly was, but every time I rewatch it as an adult, the cracks are clearer. “Feminist” is what critics called it, over and over. Buffy broke through the ’90s teen soap noise with an empowered hero who flipped the script on what women could do onscreen. We could quote the best moments and endlessly debate the usual fandom controversies, though we always seemed to land back on “Spike or Angel?”īuffy and her Scooby Gang were an important part of the formative years for many women of a certain age. Watching Buffy was a ritual, a night of worship of our favorite demon-slaying cheerleader. We’d find ourselves bleary-eyed and exhausted as the sun rose, but sleep wasn’t on the table. We’d pick a season and stay up the whole night, watching the entire thing straight through. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the star of every sleepover I had as a teenager. However, this also makes a good stand-alone novel. When I found You by Brenda Novak is the eighth book in her Silver Springs series. Reading it is almost like self-torture under hypnotism you don't want to do it, but once you are into it, there's no way to stop. It is not a fast read: even though Lionel Shriver writes beautiful prose, she writes about ugly things. The novel makes us think, long after we finish it. This is one hundred percent correct as far as We Need To Talk About Kevin is concerned. As a great writer of my native language said: "The real story is on the unwritten pages" that is, it is the gaps, the pauses and the undercurrents between the characters (which the reader is forced to complete or imagine) which is the mark of great literature. I am a little apprehensive as to how I should begin this review: there are so many things to talk about.įirst of all, I consider this to be truly a great work of literature, not simply "fiction".
